Choose jewelry by both its base metal and its surface finish. Sterling silver contains 92.5% silver. Gold-plated steel has a steel base with a gold layer at the surface. Gold-plated silver is another combination: a silver base with a gold finish. These descriptions are different, and none should be read as a promise of solid-gold jewelry.
Understand the three combinations
| Description | Base material | Surface and care |
|---|---|---|
| Sterling silver | 92.5% silver alloy | Silver surface; can tarnish. Protect stones and intentionally oxidized details when cleaning. |
| Gold-plated silver | Silver, as identified on the product | Gold layer at the surface. Avoid silver polish on plated areas. |
| 14K gold-plated steel | Steel | 14K gold electroplating. Wipe gently; avoid abrasive polish and friction. |
For plated jewelry, the karat description refers to the gold in the plating, rather than the entire piece. A steel base does not make an item sterling silver or gold vermeil. Plating thickness, specific steel grade and allergy suitability are separate facts; do not infer them from a gold color or the word “steel.”
Compare actual La Tiera examples
The Faceted Black Spinel Sterling Silver Necklace pairs black spinel beads with sterling silver accents, clasp and a heart-shaped end tag. Its 40 cm strand includes a 5 cm extension, with a listed weight of approximately 15 g. Choose it for a shorter adjustable black-and-silver beaded design.
The Raw Amber Sterling Silver Ring uses oxidized sterling silver. Its darkened details are part of the appearance, so vigorous polishing is not the right default approach. Silver color and finish can differ between designs.
The Celeste Freshwater Pearl Lariat has gold-plated silver details alongside freshwater pearls and seed beads. Care needs to protect both the plated surface and the pearl strand.
The Onda Sculptural Stud Earrings have a steel base with 14K gold electroplating. They are sold as a pair, with a listed pair weight of approximately 5.3 g and dimensions of approximately 26.1 × 21.5 mm per earring. The post uses a butterfly-style push back.

Choose for the way you wear jewelry
Start with the design and fit: ring size, necklace length, earring weight and fastening. Then compare the actual materials. Vintage Silver focuses on vintage-inspired silver settings and statement shapes, while the Everyday Edit offers 14K gold-plated steel designs. Check each product's components; a pendant-only listing does not include a chain.
If you have a known metal sensitivity, ask about the exact item before purchase. Neither “sterling silver” nor “steel” alone guarantees that every wearer will tolerate every component. La Tiera does not describe these plated steel pieces as universally hypoallergenic or permanently waterproof.
Clean according to the most delicate material
Wipe plated pieces gently with a soft dry cloth. Avoid silver polish, abrasive compounds and vigorous rubbing on the gold finish. Remove jewelry before swimming, showering and exercise, and keep perfume and household cleaners away from the surface. Plating can wear over time; care can reduce unnecessary wear but cannot make the finish permanent.
For plain, unplated sterling silver, a silver polishing cloth can help with tarnish. Keep polish away from amber, pearls, resin, gemstones and intentionally darkened details. Mixed-material pieces need the instructions for their most delicate component. Read the Jewelry Care guide before choosing a cleaner.
Common questions
Is 14K gold-plated steel solid gold?
No. The base is steel, and 14K describes the gold plating. The piece is not solid gold.
Is gold-plated steel the same as gold-plated silver?
No. Their base metals differ. Celeste's listed metal details are gold-plated silver; Onda's base is steel.
Which material needs less care?
All three combinations need care suited to their finish and other components. Plated surfaces need gentle cleaning, and a silver piece with pearls or amber also needs to protect those materials.
