Freshwater pearls and shell pearls are different materials. Freshwater pearls grow in freshwater mollusks; shell pearls are manufactured pearl imitations. Choose freshwater pearls when you want a pearl-grown material and organic variation, or shell pearls when a particular color and coordinated bead appearance suit your style. For a necklace, also compare length, weight and fastening: those details can matter as much as the pearl type.

What do the names mean?

A cultured pearl is a real pearl grown in a mollusk with human intervention. A natural pearl forms without that intervention. “Freshwater” describes the environment, rather than proving whether a pearl is natural or cultured. “Baroque” describes an irregular shape; it does not identify the material or establish a quality grade.

Shell pearls are imitation pearls, often made from shell beads with a surface coating. They are not freshwater cultured pearls. A gray color or a baroque-style shape alone cannot establish pearl type. Check the product's material description, and ask about origin or treatments if those details affect your choice.

Choose for your neckline and comfort

The Celeste Baroque Freshwater Pearl Lariat combines irregular pearl shapes with champagne, pink, lavender and golden tones. Its clasp position changes the neckline and the remaining drop. Choose it if the freshwater-pearl material and mixed color palette are the details you want.

Celeste: an approximately 88 cm freshwater-pearl strand with gold-plated silver details.

The Selene Grey Shell Pearl Tassel Lariat offers a cooler, metallic-gray color and a tassel silhouette. At approximately 70 g, it is the more substantial of these two necklaces. Choose it for that color and shape, while treating its shell pearls as an imitation-pearl material.

Selene: an approximately 80 cm gray shell-pearl lariat, with a listed weight of 70 g.

Measure a necklace you already like and compare its length with these strands. For a lariat, consider both the neck loop and the hanging drop; an 80 or 88 cm total strand is not the same as an ordinary closed necklace worn at that circumference. Check the Size Guide and browse Modern Pearl for shorter alternatives.

Care for the whole necklace

Keep perfume, hairspray and household cleaners away from pearl surfaces and plated components. Put the necklace on after cosmetics have dried, wipe it gently after wearing, and store it separately from harder jewelry. Avoid steam, ultrasonic cleaners and abrasive polishing. On Celeste, also protect the gold-plated silver details from silver polish. Follow our Jewelry Care guide for the complete mixed-material piece.

Common questions

Are shell pearls the same as freshwater pearls?

No. Shell pearls are imitation pearls; freshwater pearls are pearl-grown material. Similar color or shine does not make the materials interchangeable.

Does baroque mean natural pearl?

No. Baroque describes shape. Read the separate material description to understand whether a bead is a pearl or a pearl imitation.

Which of these necklaces is lighter?

Celeste is listed at approximately 47 g and Selene at approximately 70 g. Those are specifications for these designs, not a claim that every freshwater-pearl necklace is lighter.
